As you all may know by now, I’ve been pretty excited about the upcoming school year – my children have some really fantastic curricula, resources, and activities coming up this year. As I was trying to figure out the last bits and pieces that I wanted to fill into the plan – I knew I wanted to hit on some grammar this year, but didn’t want to add in a huge overwhelming grammar curriculum on top of the other work my kids will be doing. So, when I had this Level 3 Fold-N-Go Grammar Pack resource fall into my lap, I thought this will fit the bill just right. Not only am I going to share WHY I am excited to use this in our homeschool this year – but I also have an easy, amazing giveaway for you: one free Fold-N-Go Grammar Pack in the level of your choice from Write Shop!
I received a copy of this product in exchange for a review and giveaway, but all of my opinions are my own and unbiased. You may also find affiliate links in this post – you can see more information about this on my Disclosure Policy.
I once heard Julie Bogart speak about grammar, and she said something that has become something I remind myself all the time. Grammar has a finite amount of ‘things’ to learn, and if you do it year in and year out, most likely you’re just burning your kids out on it. I think language is fascinating, I have always been a reader/writer/lover of language – but I have never enjoyed grammar. Part of that MIGHT be because every year that I was in school, we had this particular language arts concept hammered down on us.
I want my kids to not only love language, but also be interested in HOW our language works. How the words work together, how can we communicate and write more clearly. So, grammar is important in our homeschool, but we don’t do it every single year. And we do it very differently depending on the season of life we’re in.
Write Shop Fold-N-Go Grammar
This year happens to be a year I do want to fold in some grammar review and some new concepts as well. We’ve used a few grammar curricula in the past, but I wanted something REALLY quick to implement, that won’t be a big takeover of our day. When I was given the opportunity to take a look at a Fold-N-Go Grammar Pack from WriteShop, and offer a giveaway here on my blog, I thought “well…it might look a bit young for my almost 13 yr old, and yet it looks good too”. So, I grabbed a copy of the Level 3 Fold-N-Go Grammar pack and decided to give it a whirl.
Well. Once I sat down with the packet and took a close look at it, it’s actually going to be a good challenge for both of my kids. The grammar concepts are presented really simply, but there’s a lot there. There are 10 Lessons, each with six pages with one concept per page. You assemble the pages in a lapbook-style setup with Manila folders, but I think you could just as easily hole-punch these and keep them in a binder with tab dividers for each lesson.
These “Fold-N-Go Grammar packs” are designed to be used alongside the Write Shop Junior Writing Curriculum. However, they work beautifully as a stand-alone grammar resource no matter what you’re using in your homeschool for writing.
How The Fold-N-Go Grammar Pack Fits Into Our Plans
My kids have a full year coming up. My oldest will be working through Build Your Library Level 8, and my daughter has Oak Meadow Grade 6. Both of these are very full, complete, rich curricula full of great stuff. In addition, we’ll be using our much-loved Brave Writer products – which covers our writing (and quite a bit of mechanics, via The Arrow and the Boomerang guides). So then, where do I fit in even the simplest of grammar resources?
Into our morning basket!
I wracked my brain, sitting with these fun, wonderful grammar sheets, thinking “Okay but how?” And then I glanced over at my empty Morning Time basket (for now – more on that in an upcoming post!) and had my lightbulb moment.
I put together the first five Fold-N-Go Grammar folders, though I haven’t stapled them in yet because I’m considering going to find some cute decorative folders, just to make it more fun.
So, each week for the first part of our school year – the kids and I will go through the grammar concept together in our morning time basket. Easy peasy, just a few minutes each day and VOILA! My kids are fitting in just that little extra bit of grammar, no big overwhelming curriculum to manage or add in to their already-heavy-workload.
